F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions about Electrolysis and Hair Removal
Q. Isn't laser hair removal faster then electrolysis?
Faster for the first pass - yes. Permanent - no. There is still no statistically significant evidence or proof that laser epilation is permanent. In fact, it is not much better then waxing, no matter what the advertisers say. It can even cause skin discoloring and scarring. The U.S. F.D.A. specifically prohibits laser epilation manufacturers and salons from making claims about permanence. However, that restriction is often ignored. We would like to state that, as always, we will continue to keep informed of the latest developments in the laser hair removal field along with other hair removal modalities. Should we find any to be safe and effective, then we will certainly offer those service at our offices.
Q. How does electrolysis remove hair?
An extremely fine wire is used that slides into the natural opening of the hair follicle and treatment is applied. Presterilized disposable wires are used for health precautions.
Q. What method will be used?
There are three available methods: High Frequency (thermolysis), Galvanic (electrolysis), and Blend (combination of the two). Depending on several factors, any or all of the above may be used. The Blend, however, is the newest and most effective.
Q. Is electrolysis painful?
Whether there is any discomfort during electrolysis is quite variable depending on a patient's tolerance and modality used. During most treatments a definite sensation will be noticed. It has been variously described as a "slight heat", "tingling" or "stinging" sensation. There are various prescription and nonprescription topical medications that may be used to numb the treated area. We use a special electrolysis epilator that has several patented features to make the treatments as tolerable and comfortable as possible. We are trained to work within the comfort tolerance of our patients. Please do not hesitate to let us know what you are feeling during the course of your treatment.
Q. Is electrolysis expensive?
Considering the cost of other forms of nonpermanent hair removal and the intense concentration required by the electrologist, as well as the equipment, office space, insurance, etc., the fees charged by electrologists are thought, by most, to be surprisingly very reasonable. When compared to other health and beauty-care services and the cost of dealing with excessive hair using temporary means, electrolysis, in most cases is very affordable. Remember, the problem is being dealt with permanently and not just on a short-term basis.
Q. Is electrolysis really permanent?
YES. Electrolysis is the only safe and permanent hair removal recognized by the American Medical Society. By all means, ask your doctor.
Q. What causes growth of excess hair?
Many factors influence the growth of excess hair. It can be traced to heredity or hormonal disturbances such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Some types of illnesses, operations and medications may also be factors.
Q. Can I use depilatories to remove hair?
Yes, but this is only a temporary method. As with razors and tweezers, hair grows back within a short period of time. Depilatories also have an unpleasant odor, take time to use, and are a continuous expense. Also they can cause fine hairs to grow deeper and become course and dark.
Q. Will there be regrowth after treatments?
Yes. Some regrowth is to be expected due to distorted hair follicles and the fact that all hair is not seen at any one time. However, by following your scheduled regular treatments, PERMANENT RESULTS WILL BE ACHIEVED!!
Q. What can I do about heavy growth of hair between treatments?
You can safely cut or shave hairs in or near the area being treated. Do not tweeze, wax or use chemical depilatories. Because a surgical microscope is used, the hair can be very short, even on the day of your treatment.
Q. What is the right age for electrolysis?
Any age is right. Of course, we recommend that, in the cases of pre-teens, a physician should be consulted before treatment begins.
Q. How about healing?
Healing after electrolysis is generally rapid, with no signs of the treatment remaining on your skin. Occasionally, you may have a temporary redness, but it will quickly disappear with your own after-treatment that will be instructed to you by your electrologist.
